Not all the towers of Anatos are in good condition and nowhere is this more evident than the Old District, whose towers are either in constant repair or crumbling ruins open to the elements. Some of the constructs here defy the passage of time and stand stronger than even the newest towers, allegedly constructed by founders of the city, but the majoirty were built later and have not lasted well. Despite the problems there are still people who make a home here, though many search the old ruins in hope of finding some lost mural or artifact they can sell so they can move on to a better home.
No building in Anatos is quite like the White Lily Tower, a tall white structure made out of a mysterious crystal substance that appears to grow by itself. According to legend the Gemma Torrum, the Magic Guild, were given the seed of the building by the god Nak’ado and has since grown into a majestic tower. Inside are numerous halls and rooms where the Guilds members conduct their research, meditate on the nature of magic, and record their knowledge for future generations. Entry to non-members is incredibly difficult without permission as the Tower reacts to intruders by sealing them away before tossing them outside.
At the very peak of the tower sits an enormous crystal white lily, which houses the guild's largest book collection, the Enlightened Library. Some members strive their entire lives to get their research housed in the Library, placed alongside the greatest tomes ever written. Despite the enormous size of the tower the Magic Guild has the smallest number of full-time members, and it’s empty halls often become the lairs of magical creatures attracted by the towers immense arcane presence. Junior or student academics are often sent to ‘calm' these disturbances, as part of their training but also to prevent some of the ‘residents' from getting out of control.
Sat atop one of the towers of the district is the Sapphire Observatory, a beautiful building made out of blue stone with a massive telescope inside to gaze up into the sky with. Unofficially the Observatory serves as the gathering place for the followers of Nak’ado, because the temple to the God of Magic does not exist within the city. For mysterious reasons the true temple of Nak’ado sits upon the surface of the moon and can be observed through the telescope. No one knows why it is there, or what circumstances lead to its discovery, but those who gaze upon it through the Observatory all conclude it is his temple. Some have even suggested that they’ve seen someone in the temple, though most scholars consider these stories to be flights of fancy.
The followers of Nak’ado believe in the pursuit of truth and knowledge, the endless quest for answers to some of life's great mysteries. For them it is not enough to know, one must always question. They believe the temple's mysterious location is an invitation to ponder, about life and its great questions, but also to humble those who believe they know everything.
An underwater tower built to house the cities dead, the Drowned Tower is a maze of catacombs and flooded chambers with each floor dedicated to a different stage of death. At the towers peak sits a golden painted temple dedicated to Seros and serves as a celebration of life and new beginnings, which people make trips to in order to pray for good fortune and health.
Beneath the temple the newly dead are interred, it's cold halls keeping bodies in a respectable state for their family to mourn them. Once the week of mourning has passed the bodies are taken down to the middle levels, where their flesh will be consumed by various animals and fish, until finally their bones are set to rest at the lowest levels. At the very bottom of this macbere structure sits a second temple to Seros, dedicated to the underworld, which only her followers make pilgrimage to.
The followers of Seros are a mixed group, some are doctors and midwives, while others are morticians caring for the deceased. Regardless of their profession each dedicates themselves to the care of others, in this life or the next. Other worshippers of the Goddess pay homage to bat statues, as they are thought to be her eyes and ears in the world of the living.
Standing amidst the yellow sand towers of the first district is a white structure taller than any of the others, made from the bones and hardened flesh of the Titan Karrana. Legend has it the Titan stood with the champions in defense of Anatos, and with his dying breath told the people of the city to use his flesh to make a shelter for themselves. Few people live in the tower these days but those who do are often warriors training to earn the Titans blessing. It’s not uncommon for people travelling through the tower to be challenged by wandering warriors and battle sages.
According to its residents the Titans heart still beats in a secret chamber somewhere in the tower, and occasionally people find their way to it after winning a great victory. Allegedly the Titan speaks to those who reach his heart, offering them his blood and some of his power, and sometimes whsipers to them prophecies about future battles.
Though there are many crumbling towers in the district none are as infamous as the Tower of Takar'ra, which has been abandoned for as long as people can remember. Numerous stories and rumors circle around why the tower now sits empty, some say it is haunted, while others say it has become cursed and is now home to a den of fiends. Regardless of the rumors it's well known that it now serves as the home of strange sludge-like monsters. These creatures deplore water and so can’t leave the tower, but can strip flesh from bone in a matter of minutes, and pose a grave threat to anyone foolish enough to go poking around.
When the ice dragon Xiao-Sen first escaped onto the surface he ushered a terrible winter that covered the city, and built for himself a fearsome tower made of ice. Half of the tower still stands today and though it might not loom over the city anymore it’s presence serves as a constant reminder of the dangers the dungeons represent. The tower itself is a ruin still filled with deadly traps and violent creatures who once served at the dragons behest. Few dare to venture anywhere near the tower, but rumors of secret treasures occasionally attract the foolish and the brave to an early demise.
