In the past the dangers, and the opportunities, of the mysterious dungeons were explored individually by the guilds. Each would lay claim to a dungeon as soon as it arose, which would inevitably lead to conflict between them. When they couldn’t directly fight they did everything they could to sabotage each other's efforts, and as fate would have it this lack of cooperation would open the city up to one of it’s greatest threats.
When the ice dragon Xiao-Sen escaped his dungeon none of the guilds by themselves could beat him. For a whole season the dragon terrorized the city, until a band of champions from across the city arose and finally defeated him. In the aftermath these champions denounced the guild's rivalries and with permission from the Elder Council formed their own guild to deal with the threats posed by the Dungeons.
Today the Heartseekers are formed of people across the city and it’s guilds, sometimes sent by them as liaisons, or volunteering themselves in a bid for fame and glory. Membership in the Heartseekers is considered temporary by most, as eventually members retire back to their own lives after making it big or being worn down by the struggle. The Guild technically has no leadership but the veterans are often looked to for guidance when members cannot agree on a course of action.
When the old world was destroyed so was all of its knowledge. For a long time afterwards people survived on the most basic of teachings, and what few pieces of higher learning survived was often jealousy hoarded by it’s keepers. To ensure a brighter future and to safeguard what little knowledge remained a number of magic users and scholars gathered together to create the Gemma Torrum, a guild dedicated to the preservation and discovery of knowledge . It’s said that the God of Magic was so impressed by their dedication that he gifted them a crystal lily that over time grew into the White Lily Tower where the guild makes its home today.
The guild is somewhat secretive at times, fearing the knowledge they have could be misused, but also have members who are enthusiastic teachers and seek to spread as many useful lessons as they can throughout the city. Members often act independently of one another and treat their leader, the Master Wordsmith Yujian, more akin to a great teacher and instead use small committees to make rulings and decisions on specific subjects. Even so great respect is granted to the Master Wordsmith, as they are allegedly chosen by the God of Magic during a lunar ritual to serve as the guild's greatest scholar.
Amounsgt the many wonders of Anatos none are quite like the Novan Forge, named and crafted by one of the original champions that defeated Varasha. The Forge is infact a tall volcano like structure that reaches far down into a pool of primal fire, where legend has it the fire links to the great furnace that burns in the centre of the world. Periodically the forge fills to the brim with lava and the smiths of the forge hurry to extract pieces of it to form into stone, and on occasion manage to rescue vital metals from the burning pools.
The Novan Crafters are an integral part of the city, as they’ve used their vast skills to erect most of the city’s buildings and towers. In addtion their skill with metals and glass supplies the city with a majority of it’s tools. For this reason the Novan Crafters prefer to be neutral in all matters, doing their duty fairly for all without casting judgement or getting involved. When they do decide to act few can equal the sheer might and ferocity of it’s warriors, who wade into conflict with the deadliest tools the guild can muster.
The Forgers Guild has no leader, their hierarchy is made up of a series of master smiths and their apprentices. Whenever the guild needs to make a decision it is voted on by all members.
At the very edge of the city sits the Docklands where the bravest people of the city dwell and prepare to strike out against the great dangers and unknowns of the wide endless ocean. Whilst most people in the city are content to lead simple peaceful lives some find no satisfaction in this passive lifestyle and find themselves joining the hunters of the Fishermen. It is said that the guild was first formed by a group of humble fishers during a great famine, but unable to watch the people suffer they sought to do something about it so set out with their hooks and spears and slew a great monster to bring it’s meat back. Ever since the Fishermen have been known as monster hunters, bringing the city an important source of food and ridding the seas of terrible beasts.
Where others sit and watch, a Fisherman acts. The guild attracts all manner of people and makes no judgement about their conduct, all disputes are resolved with physical challenges or competitive hunts. It’s leader is always chosen amongst those who make the biggest and most dangerous catch during the end of a cycle, when the eclipse attracts the greatest and most deadly monsters. Currently the leader is a blue Dragonborn by the name of Cazzar after the previous leader disappeared two cycles ago when they set off for a grand hunt by themselves.
It is said that in the past food was grown upon endless golden fields, that it fell freely from trees for all the people to enjoy, but such vista’s can only be seen in dreams now. Today Anatos receives the majority of its food from the great underwater forests that lie below it, cared for by merfolk and other underwater races. The Kerela Affinity began as a charitable organization devoted to safeguarding the city's food and ensuring the prosperity of all of its people. However this much power over such a crucial resource changed the guild over time and many of its members began to indulge and abuse the influence they held over the city.
While the Affinity have never directly threatened the city they have been known to engage in criminal activity to assert their power. Garnering ‘favours’ from those who want a little ‘extra’, shutting down attempts to compete with them, and even engaging in a black market of dangerous dungeon items.
Influence in the Kerela Affinity not only requires a deep understanding of nature, but also how to claim others wealth and power for yourself. The leader of the Affinity is a mermaid by the name of Delmara, who got her position by ‘stealing’ it from the previous leader who was forced to retire and now manages the forest caretakers.
Founded by the First Baron, Lord Herald of the Exchequer Maravan, the Hierarchy was originally just a traders guild devoted to protecting it’s members and ensuring a fair and equal distribution of goods in the city. The Guild became rich very quickly, and after inventing the ‘gold standard’ currency it’s members began adopting more refined mannerisms to fit their success and new station. Adopting titles from the old world the Hierarchy became obsessed with the idea of prestige and pedigree, and to prove their superiority to all their opponents within and without.
Ever since the Maravan Hierarchy has become a home for noble families, as well as entrepreneurs able to climb it’s complex web of titles and rules. While those outside of the guild don’t place much stock in these ‘titles’, within the Hierarchy they are considered not only badges of honour but also a way to influence the world around them.
The leadership is made of a council of Barons, led by the First Lord Baron, the Sovereign High Lord, Master of the Golden Towers, Bartholomew the Seventh. Only the title of First Lord Baron hasn’t changed over it’s history but all other titles can be bought, earned or invented by notable members, creating a truly complex Hierarchy system that quite often loops on itself.
Throughout Anatos’s history there have always been smaller guilds filling niches the larger guilds don’t cover, but none have ever gained prominence and tend to only last a generation or two. In the aftermath of the Guild Wars however the major guilds sought new ways to compete with one another for resources and influence, and since these smaller guilds did not sign the pact of peace they were an ideal tool to use. Becoming known as Shadow Guilds these small organisations would take criminal jobs and help the major guilds play out an indirect conflict between each other.
The Shadow Guilds were often sent to secure Dungeons, or sabotage rivals efforts to extract treasure and resources from them. But ever since the Heartseekers guild was formed the Shadow Guilds main business with the dungeons has been placed in jeopardy and many of them hold a deep resentment against this new guild.
