Difficulty is a measure of how much challenge the event will present you with. This does not necessarily mean how strong combat opponents could be, it can also serve to clarify how high your chance of failure is.
Apprentice. This event has almost no risk of failure, and poses no danger to a character. An Apprentice event might be purely social in nature, the party gathering up for a fun evening, buying from strange merchants or researching lore. If there is combat it’ll be more a diversion or a quick roadblock.
Journeymen. This event has a small risk of failure, and may pose a light danger to a character. When you join a Journeymen event it’s expected that while there will be challenges they will be at a level that you should be able to handle. Victory is not guaranteed, and while something could go wrong, the repercussions for failure are usually light.
Adventurer. This event has a ‘fair’ risk of failure, and may pose a moderate danger to a character. At Adventurer the challenges you face might be at your ‘level’, but they play faster and hit harder. Failure is a great possibility if things go awry or a big mistake is made, and players need to be on their toes if they want to come out unscathed.
Legendary. This event is extremely hard to succeed at and may pose a lethal danger to a character. When you embark on a Legendary event you do so with the full knowledge you could die, or that failure will result in terrible consequences for you and perhaps the city itself. You might have to face off with a powerful monster, engage in tense diplomacy with an influential figure, or unearth knowledge that brings great danger to everyone around you. You will need to use all of your wit, cunning and resources to come out on top
Epic. Failure is near guaranteed, and character death is almost certain. An Epic event is the moment when you realize the DM is actively trying to kill you. Epic events are rare and require Admin approval to run, as the danger they pose to your party and perhaps the wider city is immeasurable. To succeed at an Epic event is to give it everything you have, and more, for anything less will ensure failure.
Tags are used to describe what the event will include, hinting at its style and tone. This is in order to be as transparent as possible with our player base on what to expect in an event. If we were setting up a normal campaign you wouldn’t tell your players it was going to be a forest adventure, then change it to an urban city game halfway through the first session. Doing the same in the westmarsh game more often than not makes the players feel like they’ve had the rug pulled out from under them, and they're suddenly involved in an event they didn’t sign up for or even necessarily enjoy.
In order to respect everyone's time, and ensure everyone is having fun, it’s important that we are transparent about what the style of the event is. I never want a situation where a player sets up a social event, only for a DM to throw combat into it uninvited just because it’s an ‘event’ and would be ‘dramatic’. As players and DM’s we are all on the same team, and need to keep in mind all of our various tastes and styles and play towards one another's strengths.
