Anyone can join the Heartseekers, they make few judgements about people’s pasts or abilities so long as they can be put to good use for the sake of the city as a whole. When a person decides to sign up to the guild a senior member will take them to a wall in the Hall of Heroes. These walls are covered in shards of clear crystal glass, shattered remains of Dungeon Hearts retrieved from some of the most dangerous dungeons ever encountered. When a hand is placed on them they take a small prick of blood and turn crimson red and will then continue to glow red so long as that person lives. Rumor has it the process has other secret bindings on it’s members, but it’s unknown if that’s true or not.
Unlike most guilds the Heartseekers don’t have a leader or organisation hierarchy, instead they favor a loose structure in order to help them make the quick decisions needed when down in the dungeons. As a Heartseeker your taught the following:
Follow your Heart
When you form a team, that small group may as well be the entire Guild. Take to Heart what your members say, and come together as a team.
Always have your team’s back. We come from many different backgrounds and we likely won’t always see eye to eye, but in the end we must be able to rely on each other or else none of us will survive.
Be prepared to make decisions. It’s not always cut and dry what any of us should do, if we should press on, what side to take, or even what to do. We can always argue about what’s right once we’re home, but in the moment only you and your team can decide what’s right.
We don’t leave people behind. Every life is precious and cannot be replaced, be stalwart and brave, and come back to us alive.
As part of the Heartseekers duty they also recover samples from the dungeons they explore, pieces of plants, animals, or even materials. Members then sell these samples to the Guilds, who use them to gauge whether they’d be interested in sending a team into the dungeon once it’s been made safe. The Guilds each have their own priorities and rarely share the bounties found in the dungeons, so it often falls to the Heartseekers to make a decision which guilds should have access to which dungeons after a round of diplomacy.
What the guilds are able to recover has potentially far reaching consequences and for them and the city, so for the Heartseekers it’s important to carefully balance each of the guilds needs and desires. While everyone is trying to improve life in the city the ways and methods the guilds use are often dynamically opposed to one another, causing an occasional burst of tension between them. It’s up to you to judge for yourselves what path we should all strive for.
