Dermal fillers, while most commonly associated with wrinkle reduction and lip plumping, can also be used for treatment of acne scars of certain types. Rolling scars, which are wave-like depressions in the skin, and some boxcar scars, which are circular and deep indentations, can both be greatly improved with fillers. In this application, hyaluronic acid fillers such as Juvederm or Restylane are commonly used. Subcision may be more effective for severe scarring that does not respond well to fillers.
Dermal filler treatment will begin with thoroughly cleansing the skin and determining which scars will be filled. The amount of filler used varies depending on the number of scars treated and the severity of the scars. The type of filler will be determined by your provider's recommendation. After that, a needle will be inserted beneath the scarred area and the filler will be deposited until all scars have been treated.
You can resume normal activity almost immediately after receiving dermal filler injections; however, it is recommended that you wait 24-48 hours before engaging in strenuous physical activity.
The ideal candidate for dermal fillers for acne scarring is over the age of 18 and has obvious, depressed acne scarring who wants to use a minimally invasive approach.
Dermal fillers for acne treatment are not advised for patients who are experiencing active acne breakouts.
