Most Americans know about George Washington's life during the American Revolution. Very few know about how his wife, Martha Dandridge Custis Washington, spent those harrowing years.
Despite fears for her safety, with the assistance of her husband's cousin, Martha managed Mount Vernon during her husband's 8-year absence. Her responsibilities involved supervision and care of the estate’s hired, indentured, and enslaved workers at a time when a smallpox epidemic was rampaging through the country. George also asked her to spend almost every winter of the war with him at his winter quarters. In camp, as the commander's wife, she helped entertain important guests, was a mother or aunt figure for the wives of the younger officers on the staff, and supported George during very difficult times. Martha also took a prominent role in raising money for the Revolutionary Army, a role which has been largely forgotten.
Mary V. Thompson, after completing a Bachelor's degree in History with a minor in folklore from Samford University, went on to University of Virginia graduate school, where she focused on Colonial American history. For the next forty-plus years. she served at George Washington's Mount Vernon in the Interpretation, Curatorial, and Library departments, while also writing two books, In the Hands of a Good Providence: Religion in the Life of George Washington. and The Only Unavoidable Subject of Regret: George Washington, Slavery, and the Enslaved Community at Mount Vernon. Mary retired as a Research Historian Emerita and is working on a new book about the animals at Mount Vernon. She is also an Emerita member of the Alexandria Historical Society.
This talk continues the Alexandria Historical Society 2026 America250 programming. We are presenting new perspectives on this defining event in the nation’s history, especially in our local area.
