Alexandria Historical Society Awards Program Criteria & Nomination Procedures
Each year, history lovers throughout the city of Alexandria research, preserve and interpret our rich, diverse, complex, and dynamic history. To recognize the endeavors of these citizens and organizations the Alexandria Historical Society presents the T. Michael Miller Award, named after former AHS President, Lee-Fendall House curator, local historian, and prolific writer T. Michael Miller. The award highlights the best in public history in Alexandria. See the list of past winners of the award and more about Mike. Separately, outstanding history students from each of Alexandria’s four high schools are given an Alexandria High School History Award based on the recommendations of their teachers
Anyone can nominate a person or even an organization for this award. The nominee could have created exhibits, conducted preservation activities, or managed social media campaigns. They might have written blog posts, research papers, theses, dissertations, or books. Nominees could include docents, volunteers or supporters of the various Alexandria historic sites. Nominations that highlight creative applications of history are encouraged. Honorees will be presented with a certificate and gift at a ceremony and reception usually held yearly in April.
Nominations should be emailed to AlexandriaHistoricalSociety@gmail.com by 1 March each year. Each nomination should have a short (between 200 to 500 words) description of the nominee. If the nominee has produced any work products that should be considered by the awards committee, they can be submitted alongside the nomination, but are not required.
All submissions are due February 15th.
