“Knowledge is in every country the surest basis of public
happiness.”
— George Washington, First Annual Address to Congress, 1790
Support AHS.
Advance Knowledge.
Pursue Happiness.
Founded in 1974 for the American Bicentennial, the
Alexandria Historical Society is Alexandria’s only
independent historical society dedicated exclusively to
researching and sharing the city’s stories. Now entering
our sixth decade — and the nation’s 250th anniversary
— we do it through in-person lectures, digital exhibits,
student awards, and archival research grants.
Telling Alexandria’s Stories
Longer Than Anyone Else in Town
It is simply
Common Sense
to support us in this
historic moment.
— with apologies to Thomas Paine, 1776
