Organization

The Alexandria Historical Society is currently managed by an Executive Board consisting of a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer, and ten directors.  All positions are elected by vote of the membership. Past presidents are eligible to be elected to the Board of Directors. At the request of the president, the immediate past president may serve as an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors.

AHS is the beneficiary of the Abshire Endowment originally established in honor of former AHS Board Member J. Patten Abshire, (1993-1997). The endowment was designed to provide funds to “programs for grants, awards and publications.” Grants may be awarded to support the goals of AHS as opportunities arise. History awards are presented annually to student and adult historians, both professional and volunteer. Publications produced by AHS may take any form that makes information “known to the community at large, [by] exhibiting, displaying, disclosing, or revealing.” Under this definition AHS publications may include visual recordings and any other online media plus any future format that provides the public with information related to Alexandria and local history.

AHS is an all-volunteer, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. Executive officers and Board directors are unpaid positions.
