AINCERT Ghaggar-Hakra Expedition 2026 Kunal
Date: 30 June 2026
Venue: Kunal, Fatehabad District, Haryana
Organiser: AINCERT
Description: AINCERT Founder President Ujjwal BU Pant visited Kunal, a Pre-Harappan to Mature Harappan transition site in Fatehabad district of Haryana. Excavated by the Haryana State Archaeology Department under R.S. Bisht in 1985 and 1986, Kunal is notable for two findings of exceptional significance. First, a hoard of silver ornaments including bangles and headbands of high silver purity, representing some of the earliest worked silver objects from the Indian subcontinent. XRF metallurgical analysis of these ornaments has established the silver composition of IVC metalwork at a formative stage of Indian silver-working tradition, providing a direct connection to the origins of the silver punch-marked coins that would appear two thousand years later. Second, a cultural sequence showing the transition from the pre-Harappan Hakra Ware phase to the Mature Harappan phase within a single stratigraphic column, making Kunal one of the most important sites for understanding the developmental continuity of the IVC. For AINCERT, the Kunal silver hoard represents the earliest evidence in the collection area of the silver-working tradition that produced the first Indian coins. A complete research paper was produced from the AINCERT field visit.
