AINCERT Ghaggar-Hakra Expedition 2026 Jallianwala Bagh
Date: 2 July 2026
Venue: Amritsar, Punjab
Organiser: AINCERT
Description: AINCERT Founder President Ujjwal BU Pant visited Jallianwala Bagh, the site of one of the most significant events in the history of the Indian independence movement. On 13 April 1919, Baisakhi day, Brigadier-General Reginald Dyer ordered his troops to open fire without warning on a crowd of between ten thousand and twenty thousand unarmed civilians gathered in this walled garden to protest against the Rowlatt Act. The firing lasted approximately ten minutes. 1,650 rounds were fired. The official death toll was 379, considered by most historians a severe undercount. People trapped in the garden jumped into the Martyrdom Well to escape the bullets and drowned. The massacre permanently destroyed the moral authority of British rule in India and was the direct catalyst for Gandhi's Non-Cooperation Movement of 1920. Bhagat Singh, who visited the site as a child, carried a bottle of blood-soaked earth from Jallianwala Bagh for the rest of his life. The Congress held its 1919 annual session in Amritsar to honour the Punjab martyrs. The site is now a national memorial with the preserved bullet-marked wall, the Martyrdom Well, the Flame of Liberty memorial, and a four-gallery museum. The AINCERT visit produced 32 field photographs systematically documenting the bullet-marked wall with 36 ASI-mapped impact points, the Martyrdom Well interior, the museum panels covering the Malaviya Report and the Amritsar Congress Session, and the quote stones of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Saifuddin Kitchlew, Lala Hardayal, and other freedom fighters. A complete research paper was produced.
