AINCERT Ghaggar-Hakra Expedition 2026 Bhirrana
Date: 30 June 2026
Venue: Bhirrana, Fatehabad District, Haryana
Organiser: AINCERT
Description: AINCERT Founder President Ujjwal BU Pant visited Bhirrana, one of the oldest known Indus Valley Civilisation sites in the world, located in Fatehabad district of Haryana. Excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India between 2003 and 2006, Bhirrana revealed a cultural sequence extending to approximately 5000 BCE, pushing the origins of the IVC cultural tradition back by over a millennium before the Mature Harappan phase conventionally associated with the great cities. The earliest levels at Bhirrana contain Hakra Ware pottery, the characteristic wheel-made pottery of the pre-urban phase found across the Ghaggar-Hakra basin, confirming that the IVC was not a sudden urban phenomenon but the culmination of a long developmental process spanning over two thousand years. The site demonstrates continuity from early agricultural settlement through the full Mature Harappan phase, providing one of the clearest stratigraphic sequences in all of IVC archaeology. Bhirrana's antiquity places it among the earliest settled communities anywhere in Asia at the time of its founding, contemporary with the earliest phases of Mesopotamian and Egyptian urban development and establishing the Indian subcontinent as an independent centre of early civilisation. The AINCERT visit produced field photographs documenting the site and its archaeological context.
