AINCERT Ghaggar-Hakra Expedition 2026 — Farmana
Date: 30 June 2026
Venue: Farmana, Rohtak District, Haryana
Organiser: AINCERT
Description: AINCERT Founder President Ujjwal BU Pant visited Farmana, a major Mature Harappan site in Rohtak district of Haryana dating to approximately 2600 to 2000 BCE. Farmana is located approximately 65 kilometres west of Delhi and covers approximately nine hectares. Excavated since 2006 under a joint Indian-Japanese team from Deccan College Pune and Kanazawa University, the site has revealed a well-planned urban settlement with standardised fired bricks in the ratio 1:2:4, sophisticated drainage systems, craft specialisation in beads and copper, and a cemetery of over 70 burials providing important evidence of Harappan social organisation. The cemetery burials are typically extended supine with consistent northward orientation, with grave goods including pottery, faience and semi-precious stone ornaments, and copper artefacts. The relative uniformity of grave goods across burials suggests an egalitarian society at Farmana. The site documents the easternmost extension of the Mature Harappan urban network, within the Ghaggar-Hakra river basin that supported the densest concentration of IVC settlements in the ancient world. The AINCERT visit produced systematic field photographs of the excavated site and surface material. Three fired brick fragments and terracotta pottery pieces were collected as surface specimens and entered into the AINCERT physical collection, making them the oldest objects in the collection at approximately 4,500 years old.
