Parent and Guardian Information

Introduction

This page has been designed to help Parents and Guardians support your child in making the best progress they can on Bedrock Learning throughout the school year.

Bedrock Learning is a Vocabulary and Grammar curriculum learning program, where Key Stage 3 students are encouraged to do 2-4 elements a week as part of their English homework. Elements is either pre/post topic test or completing a lesson. Each element takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete. During each lesson, your child will develop their vocabulary or grammar skils via compelling fiction and non-fiction texts and give them instant feedback on their progress. Meanwhile, you can receive weekly emails and have access to a parent/guardian account, that gives you direct access to your child’s progress and learning on Bedrock Learning.

Before you can create a parent/guardian account or sign up for weekly email updates. You will need to get your child's school access code. You can get your child's school access code by clicking on the Bedrock Parent/Carer Child Access Code Request Form below:

TIP: Once you're all set up, you can link your Bedrock Guardian account to your existing Microsoft or Google login if you have one (for one less password to remember!)

NOTE: If you do not, be sure to make a note your auto-generated Bedrock login details, which you can find in the settings tab of your dashboard.

FAQ

What do the points mean?

As students engage with Bedrock, they earn points. They can gain points in a range of ways:

To see the full list of points and how your child can earn them, watch this short clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHZ7rVn5s1Q

How long should my child spend on Bedrock weekly?

Your child should complete two elements on vocabulary or grammar per week. Each element takes around 15-20 minutes to complete. It is important your child takes their time to carefully read the text and answer the questions.  However, your child can do more than two elements a week. It is worth noting that your child can only do a maximum of 2 lessons a day on vocabulary and grammar.

My child has already done this task. Why are they being asked to do it again?

If a student scores under 60% in a lesson, they repeat the lesson to ensure they retain the new words before moving on to the next lesson.

Why is Bedrock being used?

Bedrock Learning is an online platform designed to improve students vocabulary and grammar skills. Words are so important in unlocking the curriculum for students and we have begun to see the impact the platform is having on reading, writing and overall literacy skills.

Can we change a child’s block?

If at any point a student scores 94% or more in two consecutive post-tests on vocabulary, they’ll be moved to the next block up to ensure they maximise their learning. Equally, if a student scores 25% or less, they’ll be re-allocated to the block below to ensure they’re learning at the right level for their ability. We do review students' progress on vocabulary at the end of every term. Sometimes we may move your child up or down a block depending on progress. If you feel your child’s block on vocabulary is either too challenging or not challenging enough, you can request a change of block by emailing your child’s English teacher. Please be aware that the block is determined from the results of the Alpha Test your child took when they first logged in and the questions will adapt to respond to the level of answers given. You child cannot change blocks on the grammar part of the program as all students start on the grammar foundation block.

Where can my child get help with Bedrock?

Students can get help with their Bedrock homework if they attend homework club which is Monday- Friday after school until 4 pm in the LRC. Mr Evans (School Librarian) is available to support your child with any questions or issues regarding Bedrock.

For general questions and help with passwords or usernames, students can ask their English Teacher or Mr Evans (School Librarian). During English lessons, teachers will regularly show students their progress.
