When you log into Bedrock Learning for the first time, you will be asked to take an Alpha Test. The Alpha Test assesses your understanding of the definitions of different words. Each question has multiple-choice answers, and the test should take approximately 20 minutes to complete. Once you have finished the test, you will be assigned to a block.
This video will show you what the Alpha Test looks like:
Each block contains 10 to 14 topics and is equivalent to a school year’s worth of learning.
Each topic will be either a fiction topic, such as The Legends of Perseus or A Noble Legend, or a non-fiction topic, such as the lives of Henry VIII’s wives or the history of the Obamas.
For each topic, you will learn the definitions of a list of words.
At the start of each topic, you will take a pre-test to see if you already understand the definitions of any words in the topic. Don’t worry if you get a low score, as you will learn the definitions of these words throughout the topic.
Each topic has six lessons. In each lesson, you will read a passage of text linked to the topic, learn the definitions of some new words, and complete fun interactive exercises and quizzes.
At the end of the topic, you will take a post-topic test to check your understanding of all the words in that topic.
Between lessons, you will complete Recap/Reteach exercises. These help you review the definitions of words you are still learning or test your knowledge of words you have already learned in the Bedrock Learning vocabulary program.

Screenshots show you the types of interactive exercises you will do in each topic lesson.
The following PDF document provides a breakdown of each block, the topics within each block, and the words you will learn in each topic.
As you work through the lessons, more words will be added to your Knowledge Organiser.
The Knowledge Organiser helps you track the words you already know, are currently learning, and have learned on Bedrock Learning.
You can also click on individual words to see the definitions for each word.
The following video provides additional information about Bedrock Learning Vocabulary for students. However, if you have any further questions about Bedrock Learning, please use the Q&A page, or speak to Mr. Evans (Librarian) or your English teacher.
Sometimes, Bedrock will tell you that you’ve earned a break. Here’s why… (It’s called “spaced learning!”). Sometimes, after you have finished a lesson, you will see this message pop up…
Don’t worry! We just want you to have a well-deserved break. You’ll be able to continue with your lesson tomorrow or the day after.
We want to make sure you understand and remember the vocabulary you have learned. Bedrock is designed with automatic systems that check your progress and adjust the activities you are given. To pass a lesson, you must score 60%. Don’t worry if you score below this — Bedrock will automatically guide you through the activity again to help the learning stick in your mind.
