Hi Nick & Thank you again for being on our 94.1FM 3WBC – Egypt Australia Radio Show [ EARS ],
Happy World Pulses Day coming up [ 10 February ]
can we start with ......................
Q1] Tell us about Pulse Australia today, post Covid, surviving recent torrential rain around Australian states, and
the effects of the ongoing war torn Ukraine/Russia and their position in exporting Pulses/Legumes to the world ?.
Faba Beans [ Fuul ], a relative of broad beans, is now growing in all Australian states, very successfully,
Australia is now supplying 90% world markets, Egypt is importing 75% of Australian Faba beans ],
France, Italy and Japan.
In Australia, Faba beans planting area has doubled in last five years
2015 – 2016 faba beans = 330,000 tonnes
UN food and Agriculture Organization demand 500,000 tonnes for Faba Beans and Australia was
providing ~ 70% world’s requirements then.
NOW, in 2020-2021
Australia is now [ 2021 ] providing ~ 90% of the world's requirements.
Q2] How did we, in Australia, become the experts on planting Faba beans and the
number One Exporter of Faba beans to the world ?
Australian Export of Faba Beans [ Fuul ] has grown from $138 Million,
$199 Million,
and NOW [ 2021 $215 Million ]
Egypt was buying 67% at ~ $134 Million,
now in 2021 75% [ ~ $162 million ]
Egypt maintains its position as the biggest buyer in the world market of Australian Faba beans,
Is that Exposure a Good thing or Bad ?
Egyptian breakfast includes a bowl of Fuul Medames [ slowly cooked Faba with a fresh garden salad, oil and lemons ]
Q3] Do we know if that’s still an affordable cheap meal, with the recent conversion rate being at $1 AUD = 20 EGY pounds ?.
Q4] Any opportunities for Australian Food processing companies to commercially cook and can Faba beans,
for local and Export markets ?
Thank You for your valuable time and informative replies.
Best Regards
