First - these are guides for when you should ideally do certain tasks. Some things will take you longer than expected, some will be easy for you - we all have different levels of skill coming into this lab. You manage your own time in this class (and keep your project log timesheet!!). The syllabus notes when certain things have hard deadlines. Other than those items, you can decide when to finish the rest if you can't get them done by the 'recommended' deadline in these checklists.
Be sure to start keeping your Project Log now! And if you're not sure what I'm referring to, jot down the time you started working on this class and then go review the Syllabus ASAP. Come back when you're done!
Complete your Initial Reflection, include:
What skills/abilities/knowledge the student hopes to learn from this experience,
Predictions about how this experience may aid you in achieving your educational/career goals, and
How many hours per week of work you need to log in your Project Log for the credit hours you are signed up for.
Complete the required initial surveys (linked in D2L).
(Again - remember you can do these over time! But don't try to pretend CITI takes 60 hours, I know better. You're by no means the first students I've had in lab.)
Review this page (onboarding).
Complete CITI Training
Prepare for using Google Tools effectively
Preview some other project track ideas to see if you want to do any of these as part of your work this semester. If any of these is right for you, let me know in your Initial Reflection.
Figure out how you want to handle online research and file management before you do any literature searches (Notes for references managers are in the Google Tips and for EZ Proxy are in our support files - see below for how to find that). I recommend figuring out a Reference Manager that can help you get citations back out of it when you need them. I personally pay for PaperPile and love it (you can keep the pdfs in your Google Drive so even if you stop paying for the service you'll have all of them). But, you get access to free as a UA student, so it's a great option too. https://ahsl.arizona.edu/refworks-endnoteweb
I also have a video on EZ Proxy now! https://youtu.be/rWu8IA3nN-c
Review Plagiarism & APA before you write anything
Review the CV/Resume work we will do later in the semester
Learn to read articles and review Lesson 2 of this (free + online) Udacity course to refresh yourself on methods before your first reading assignment
All of our lab students create artifacts, how-to's, and other support items for the team to use. You can find them all in our folder! If you need something not listed, please get in touch with the Lab Coordinator. (You can go to your Google Drive and use the search bar. If you've added the lab to your Drive and we have a support doc it will appear like magic for you.)
The full list of items available will not show below - but this can help you get there quick if needed.
You should especially check out the 'Setting Up EZ Proxy Redirect' - it will help you do online research so much faster and more efficiently!
