These tutorials are 'homemade' and are really focused on breaking down the often confusing jargon and methods into easy to understand bite size pieces. CAD isn't scary and isn't difficult, it needs a bit of patience and time to begin with, but trust me, it will eventually click for you.

How to download sample CAD files

In some of these tutorial sections, you'll have the option to download a sample CAD file which I've created. If you're not sure on how to upload it to your Fusion Drive, just click on the button below to see how to do it.

If you're a teacher and you'd like your students to record up their learning, simply make a copy of the slides on the right and assign to them in e.g. Google Classroom.

At the end there is a link to a Google Form quiz which can be useful for gauging students' understanding of the basic modelling features.

FUSION 360 INTRODUCTORY TRAINING

1. NAVIGATING & DRAWING

This first section will show you how to navigate and how the different basic drawing tools work. It's important to understand how to navigate your way around Fusion before trying to get in to modelling and drawing etc otherwise it's very easy to get totally lost!

These videos are a great starting point if you're new to Fusion 360 and new to CAD modelling. Each video is about five minutes long.

Remember:

Good CAD modelling is built upon good CAD drawing! If your drawings are messy and lacking dimensions, so will your 3D model.
Use dimensions wherever you can, remember you can always go back and edit them.
We always strive to make our CAD models as flexible as possible. This means that you can easily go back and edit dimensions without the whole model falling apart when it updates!

6. Modelling a simple Lego brick.

Have a play around with the sample Lego brick. Change the dimensions and move things around. This will give you a sense of what is meant by flexible CAD modelling. Click here for the download.

2. INITIAL MODELLING TOOLS

This section will show you how to turn your 2D drawings in to 3D. Each of these videos are about seven minutes long.

Remember:

Extrude is for creating a straight solid shape. Like a box.
Revolve is for creating something which is cylindrical or round.
Sweep is for creating a shape which follows a line, like a bent tube or a wire.
Loft is for creating a shape which morphs from one shape to another. Like a drinks glass which has a square bottom but a round top.

3. MODIFICATION TOOLS FOR MODELS

This next section shows you how to make some changes to models that you have made. Each video will be about seven minutes long.

1. How and why to use the Fillet tool to round off edges.

2. How and why to use the Chamfer tool to give angled edges.

3. How to use the Shell tool to make things hollow.

4. RENDERING

These videos show you how to create a really nice fancy image or two of the product you have designed. These are great to use in your design project portfolios to show off what an awesome CAD model you've done.

1. Initial rendering - Just getting a nice looking image.

2. Taking rendering further - building a whole scene for greater realism!

Rendering is an excellent way to get some realism in to your project.

5. ENGINEERING DRAWING

These videos help you to create technical drawings which you'd use to send to a manufacturer to show how the product should be assembled. Click on the button below if you want to download the sample 3D file for the exercise.
