Read: Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst” John 6:35
The “Our Father” is the most common prayer in the Church. Yet no matter how often we pray it, there remains a greater spiritual depth to be discovered since its very words come from the Son of God and lead us back to Him as our last end. “Give us this day our daily bread”. This is part of the prayer that we usually say. What does it mean for us? Let us learn from what the catechism taught us.
Give Us: It expresses a covenant. We are his and he is ours, for our sake. But this "us" also recognizes him as the Father of all men and we pray to him for them all, in solidarity with their needs and sufferings.
This Day: An expression of trust taught us by the Lord. Since it refers above all to His Word, this "today" is not only that of our mortal time but also the "today" of God.
Daily: It is the Day of the Lord, the day of the feast of the kingdom, anticipated in the Eucharist that is already the foretaste of the kingdom to come. For this reason, it is fitting for the Eucharistic liturgy to be celebrated each day.
Bread: The Father who created us gives us the nourishment life requires - all appropriate goods and blessings, both material and spiritual. He gave us Jesus, the bread of life.
Our soul also needs a comfort food that can nourish and sustain us for the rest of the day, week, year.. the rest of our lives. The Eucharist is our daily bread. Its effect is then understood as unity, so that, gathered into His Body and made members of him, we may become what we receive. (St. Augustine) Having the daily bread helps us navigate our journey on this pilgrimage towards heaven.
“The Father in heaven urges us, as children of heaven, to ask for the bread of heaven. Christ himself is the bread sown in the virgin, leavened in the flesh, molded in His Passion, baked in the furnace of the Sepulchre, placed in the Churches, and set upon the Altars, which daily supplies Heavenly Food to the faithful.”
– St. Peter Chrysologus
