Read 2 Peter 1:20-21

There was once a man who dropped his Bible. The priest, upon seeing this, called his attention, reprimanded him, and commanded him to kiss the Bible. Not fully understanding the situation, the man kissed it while the priest affirmed this action.

You may wonder, was it necessary to kiss the Bible? Did the priest overreact with his actions? To understand the gravity of this action, one must know what the Bible is all about. The word Bible comes from the Greek word “biblios,” meaning book. Though it contains many books, it has one main theme, which is salvation. It is the golden thread that binds all the different books.

The Catechism tells us that God is the author of Sacred Scripture. The divinely revealed realities, which are contained and presented in the text of Sacred Scripture, have been written down under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit he divinely revealed realities, which are contained and presented in the text of Sacred Scripture, have been written down under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. (CCC 105)

The Bible, then, is not just any ordinary book. It is God’s written word through Divine Inspiration, which refers to the action of the Holy Spirit working through human authors to communicate God’s message to us in the Sacred Scriptures. God will only write what He desires without altering the holiness and truth of God. Therefore, kissing the Bible when it falls is a symbol of respect for God's Word. It is a way to acknowledge the sacredness of the Scriptures, which contains God’s message of revelation. God indeed speaks through the Bible. The action of God must affect us to continue on our mission.
