Marine Science is a new subject currently offered at only six schools in South Africa. This exciting initiative was formulated between the Two Oceans Aquarium and the Department of Basic Education along with several universities to construct the curriculum being implemented.
Marine Science has 4 main components.
-Marine Biology
-Ecology
-Oceanography
-Humans and the ocean
Each section comprises 25% of the 3 year curriculum .
Marine Sciences incorporates both theoretical and practical components with continuous assessment each term.
The study of the variety of ocean plant and animal life forms, their adaptations, their relationships with one another and their environment.
Study/exploration of ecosystems e.g. rocky shores, kelp forests and sandy beaches and how the living organisms interact with the non-living components.
This component is further divided into Geological , Physical and Chemical Oceanography.
Highlighting how humans use/interact with the ocean.

Candidates must achieve adequate percentages in Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Geography.
With Marine Sciences a learner is required to have Mathematics as a subject along with at least ONE of the following : Life Sciences, Geography or Physical Sciences. History can aid a Marine Science student but is not a requirement.
