“The social or inclusive approach involves considering SEN students as unique individuals with their own strengths and weakness. In this model, SEN students are integrated into mainstream schools..” (Hockly, 2017, p.159)
It must be our aim as teachers to make ALL our students feel included, and technology should be our allied for this purpose, as it is reported to be able to support SEN students too.
The digital tool I’ve chosen to share with you today is Quizlet. With this website, you are sure to empower all your students equally, as it is a great tool for ESL learning, and it has assistive technology for reading and writing difficulties, for instance.
Here’s what some users think:
So… What is it about?
Well, it is basically a flashcard website which is excellent for vocabulary learning and it has some smart features such as creating game-show-style competitions and the possibility to embed audio files as well.
If your students need to learn new vocabulary or recycle the one they’ve already studied, we teachers can create activities for them to practice or they can create them themselves to challenge each other.
Here’s an example unit on fruits. (AS YOU CAN SEE BELOW:)
There, you can click on “flashcards” to learn/review the vocabulary; “learn” for a multiple choice activity, “write” for a filling in activity, and “spell”, to listen to a word and type it, which could potentially aid SEN students. It also has two game-like activities, including “gravity” (which is my personal favourite) which is a fast-paced study game where correct answers prevent asteroids from hitting your planet. (You can see a screenshot of the same unit on vocabulary played Gravity-like below:)
All in all, Quizlet is an incredibly useful tool, as it contains flashcard study sets and you can create your own as well. It supports SEN students, it works well in face to face, blended and hybrid education, it is fun and it is a powerful study aid for all.
