As teachers, our main goal should be to create a safe and inclusive environment for all our students to learn and grow. However, sometimes that task may become rather difficult if we don´t have the right tools to make our students with special educational needs feel comfortable in the classroom. Fortunately, there are lots of resources both digital or not in order to aid students with special educational needs (or SEN for short) nowadays. I will focus on one digital tool in particular, which is incredibly useful for students with reading difficulties such as dyslexia or visual impairment.
What is Lit2Go?
Lit2Go is a platform where the users can find a wide variety of classic books and stories in audio format. Most of the stories are well-known classics such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, The Secret Garden or even Grimm’s fairy tales. The webpage also offers, apart from the audio, the PDF version of the story as additional material.
This page is extremely well organized, and you can easily find the story you want divided by the authors, book, genre and collections. You can also filter the readability levels to find the perfect story for your students.
It´s an excellent option for students with reading disabilities or visual impairment, as they can participate in reading activities by listening to the story. As dyslexia is said to be one of the most common types of SEN according to Hockly (2017), this tool is great for teachers to bear in mind.
It´s one hundred percent free and you don´t need to log in to download anything.
It’s great in order to practice listening skills for everyone.
Increases motivation for everyone. SEN students will feel motivated because they will feel included and heard and those students that can read without problem may also find it motivating because it´s a different way to explore stories (sometimes students, particularly younger ones, tend to get distracted when reading from a sheet of paper).
It offers the PDF version of every story/book, so if there are students with hearing impairment, they can also participate in the activities without problems.
Includes the option of filtering according to the level.
Each book has a section that includes information about the story/book, such as the author, year of publication, language, origin, level, and word count.
Long books are divided into chapters, so the user can download as many chapters as they like.
One activity that can be carried out with this resource is to listen to a story (Hansel and Gretel, for instance) while the teacher or even the students act it out for extra visual aid (they can even use props or puppets).
