First we spent time talking about what we wonder about these shapes, and what we could mathematically calculate. We discussed the units of measure for length, are and volume. Together we decided on the questions above. This group project is expected to last 2 weeks. As part of the learning journey we will learn about Pythagoras, as we need an accurate way of measuring the height of the pyramid shapes. The slant height and the actual height are different. The actual height is quite tricky to measure accurately.
Groups measured the polyhedrons and recorded the measurements in their books. We talked about the importance of clear communication, by the use of headings, naming the objects using their correct mathematical name and including the colour of the objects to increase clarity. We talked about how we might order the objects, using their type (prism or pyramid) and number of sides. We talked about the difference between the external clear shapes and the coloured nets. We decided to measure the coloured nets, but to explain this in the presentation. Students were asked to think about the best way to present their measurement project.
Continue with measurement and start doing the calculations. Students were given the google classroom codes, one for Mathex Training and one for Year 7 & 8 maths. The accuracy of the actual height measurements was checked using Pythagoras. Pythagoras links were added to Google Classroom.
Today the Year 7 students have a talk they need to attend instead of Mathex. The year 8 students will investigate area: rectangle, parallelogram, triangle and trapeziums. (In that order). We used Geogebra and our mathematics books to investigate the connections.
Today the Year 8 students will explain what they learned yesterday using the notes they made. The year 7 students will investigate area: rectangle, parallelogram, triangle and trapeziums with help from the year 8 students. When this is completed students will make the area calculations for their group project.
Complete the area and perimeter calculations. Group collaboration strategies need to be recorded as part of the group project.
Tuesday & Wednesday: Completing the surface area calculations.
Thursday: Volume Calculations (require Pythagoras for accurate height of the pyramids.)
Tuesday: Pythagoras
Wednesday & Thursday: Complete the investigation.
