Dan Finkel, the co-creator of Prime Climb claims: "What books are to reading, play is to mathematics." In New Zealand we generally expect parents to read to their children each night when they are small. The expectation that parents play mathematical games with their children is not heard as often. Realistically, I would expect children to be playing mathematical games at least one a week. You can start by thinking about the games they already play, can you see the mathematics in them? Even scoring a game of scrabble counts. Cards are mathematical too. There are also games available, like Prime Climb, that are specifically designed to target vital mathematical skills.
