Coding

These pages started under the Lockdown tab, but grew so ended up with their own tab.

The subpages are: Coding Links , Scratch , More Scratch and Python

For the KEY links below, without the explanations & videos click on: Coding Links

Where do I begin?

  • Khan - What is programming.

Hour of Code

  • Block code designed for children ages 8 to 16.

  • Wonderful little videos to help you learn at your own pace.

  • A teacher can learn at the same time as the students.

  • No experience required.

  • Choose one of these:

    • Dance Party

    • Minecraft

    • AI for oceans

  • Extra for experts:

    • Khan - Hour of code

Advice:

  • Watch the videos.

  • Read the instructions.

  • HELP each other.

  • ASK for help when you need it.

  • Enjoy.

Check out what I madeI wrote the code myself with Code.org

Scratch & More Scratch

  • Block code designed for children ages 8 to 16.

  • Very quickly you can learn to create your own stories, games, tests and much more.

  • You can animate, create music, speech from text, input from keyboard or camera...

Python

  • A language used in the workplace, not just schools.

  • Huge capacity, does all sorts of things.

  • Use trinket rather than downloading the software.

  • More freedom and control than Block Code languages. Some things are easier, some things are harder, it all depends what you are wanting to code.

  • Link to Code for you to REMIX.

Which language is the best?

  • It depends what you are doing. For example, you can create animated stories in scratch very quickly. These would take forever using python. However, you may want to do something that can not be achieved easily (or at all) in scratch, which is easy to do in python.

  • Learning lots of different programming languages allows you to build up your knowledge, so that you can choose the best tool for the job.

Mathematics & Coding

  • When using DESMOS you can build up animated images, which is a very similar way of thinking to coding.

  • Creating self marking math tests using python or scratch allows you to think deeply about mathematics and coding. By testing your tests, you can practice your basic skills.
