Struggling with Sin
14 We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. 15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
We are created in God's Image so we want to be good...St. Paul wrote that man tries to be good, and knows that he wants to be good, but in some way or the ways that are in his nature makes it very difficult for him to be good...Man wants to do what is right but evil is always there with us...It seems that I desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry this goodness out...For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing...Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it...
C. S. Lewis writes that man does not know how bad he is until he tries very hard and seriously to be good...G. K. Chesterton said that the problem of this world is me...So believers believe that we are plagued by sin, and that is why the world is as it is...And sin is what is wrong with this world...
Where does these thought of man that we sin and also of trying to be good, perfect, and holy come from?...
These three characteristics of good, perfect, and holy are Images of God...This is a bad argument, but if life evolves and everything evolves toward goodness, why aren't all the animals and animal kingdom tame, good, and nice to each other and their animal neighbors in the wild...After all the evolutionist believes everything evolves in a way that they believe...And isn't the world is random to the evolutionist...If only the strong survive, evil ought to be evolving somewhere on earth to the evolutionist...If man has evolved toward goodness, perfection, and holiness why isn't everything else evolving the same way?...And God made man unique from animals...But goodness and holiness and even perfection are hard to explain as attributes that have evolved...They are more the attributes of the world through the eyes of the believer...
And for believers, these three attributes are from God...When He created mankind, He put these attributes in us, and gave us a choice, and freewill to be good if we choose to be...Man has a choice to be good or be evil...When you look around and see all the evil in the world, you can decide, whether it came from the choices God gives us or not...When you look around and see all the goodness in the world, you can make a choice, where it came from and how we could live without it...I choose that it comes from God...
Jesus teaches us that only God is good, perfect, and holy...Our trying to be good, perfect, and holy is what God has put in us, when He created us...God is in us, by and with the Holy Spirit...We know that we should be perfect, good, and holy and it comes from God...He has put that in us...If God did not put that into us, we would be randomly good, evil, and in between good and evil...Most atheists believe that these traits come from just our nature...The attributes of goodness, perfection, and being holy have evolved...They believe in the majesty of man, and not the Majesty of our LORD...I believe what Jesus, St. Paul and Lewis teaches us...I believe that only God is good...I believe we do struggle with sin...I believe when we try very hard when then learn that only God is perfect, holy, and good...Nudged along by our indwelt Holy Spirit and so we struggle for this goodness, looking to be good...And this is our struggle to find our Father, who created us in His image -who is, in fact, Perfect...
