When searching for reusable materials around the school, we saw that VBCPS uses pallets and at times, were left at the school after food or material deliveries. Students noted it and with the need to create a plant nursery for our learning garden, an opportunity arose. Very simply, two pallets were used to make room for two classes. Using two hinges on the top, we will also be able to store or change the orientation of the garden. Making it an A-frame, some scrap wood was used to make a brace. To ensure it can be movable, the width of the frame fits through the size of a doorway. Also, to make sure there are no accidents, rubber footings were adhered to bottom to prevent sliding. To create room for signs and labels on the top, more scrap wood was attached and eventually, using a wood burner, decorated.
To continue the trend of a school wide problem based learning, as many grade levels as possible would contribute to completing the learning garden project. Kindergarten students learn about the cycle of a plant, focusing on seeds to saplings. These students added in the project but taking dried marigold bushes and extracted seed pods and eventually the seeds. The Kindergarten students are specially equipped for this job as their fingers perfectly fit the narrow seeds of the marigolds and their seed pods. All of the classes collected enough seeds to fill almost two 8 ounce containers.
Although we need many different types of plants in our learning garden, we still need a nursery to initial grow the plants before planting outside. Using still more recyclable materials, we took water bottles and cut a window into the long side of it. We will be planting marigolds, as well as lettuce, and some climbing plants to see if it will catch a hold and grow up the pallet!
