Hour of Code is an event that takes place in a week in early December each year. This year Hour of Code was December 3rd-9th. To ensure all students had a chance to participate, we held 2 weeks of Hour of Code. Your students each received a certificate upon completion.
Coding is a term used to describe writing the commands of computer programs. Students were assigned by grade level different types of programs which all used a system called Block Coding. This is when commands are prewritten into an image or button which the students then manipulate in an open source program. More simply put, students learn to link images or word blocks to program simple games.
Students tend to view these coding exercises as games but they learned to create chains of codes, loops, execute commands, and especially problem solve. Kindergarten to 2nd Grade used the Code Spark Academy open source program for education. 3rd to 5th Grades were able to choose which open source program to code from Code.org. Most ended up choosing a Minecraft themed program but others available were Star Wars, Frozen, or Angry Birds. These programs are fully available online and are connected through the buttons below.
