To create saplings for our learning garden, we utilized recyclable and reused material along side artificial lighting. The large grow lab is on loan from the Lynnhaven River NOW project. The native wetland grasses are seen in the picture in the black planters. The smaller one was donated from a business partner for the school.
Each grade level has one or two classes who were chosen for the first batch and round of the carton garden. The cartons were collected and washed through 5th grade classes from breakfast meals each morning. The soil is a mix of top soil and compost which allowed for some surprise saplings to grow like peppers, tomatoes, and squash. Planted in all of the cartons were marigold seeds to test the effectiveness of the indoor grow lab.
Still upcoming in the grow lab will be a Tower Garden. This apparatus is known as an aerogarden which will grow small vegetables and plants with 90% less water and soil. We are hoping grow enough for a few classes to have a nice salad with their lunch before the end of the year!
