Learning Gardens are areas which typically are unused at a school site and now are transformed into outdoor classrooms. Gardens come in all shapes and sizes, but these are raised boxes made from pressure treated timbers and organic soil. Each grade level will have their own garden for teachers and students to decide what they would like to plant and how it will fit into their lessons. Additional space is set aside for tables and benches, making this an attractive space for teaching.
In other schools, they have grown food, herbs, and flowers which match curriculum needs. We plan to do the same here by attaching wooden lath to the tops so each grade will have particular square footage to grow and manage.
Different grade levels planned the set-up of the gardens in different forms of media. Some used iPads, paper and pencil, and even the youngest ones identified the different shapes that could fit into the area of the learning garden. Each student did utilize Google Earth in their process. Using the GIS Google Earth Technology, we were able to look for the different shapes we could utilize in the garden and measure distances to find area.
Using student input, we developed a plan for how and where to build the garden. The plans located below, were student driven and adjusted with collaboration with VBCPS Landscape Services who will be building and filling the gardens. After an initial dig and cleanup day, we are all set to begin our outdoor classroom and learning gardens.
