Recycling programs have been in existence at schools for a very long time. What makes Birdneck different is that we are also reusing what we collect in our recycling. This served double purpose as it also earned points for the Pearl School program, especially what we created with the reusable material. We focused on what we have in school such as paper and plastic products. Teachers and students also brought in items from home. Lower grade levels learned the difference between recyclable materials and how to use all of their senses to sort between them. 3rd Grade help decide which programs to conduct with Terracycling of hard to recycle products. 4th and 5th Grades designed projects to reuse the collected materials. The reusable materials were also used in other products. Lower grades created plastic bag flowers, pallets were used to created a garden, and using a grow lab, collected and cleaned milk cartons were used to make another garden.
