The event was held at the Virginia Beach Military Aviation Museum on *******. It was hosted by Creeds Elementary School and VBCPS. Many businesses participated as well providing support to host this event.
This was the first year for Birdneck to participate in this event. Elementary schools across Virginia Beach were encouraged to create STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) teams to design paper airplanes in three different events: Fastest Plane, Slowest Plane, and Furthest Flying Plane. To encourage large participation, during Innovation Lab times, 5th Grade classes were engaged in the design process of developing 1 of the 3 different types of planes. Once each class choose who's planes were the best in each category, during their P.E. block, students competed to see who's planes would be submitted into the contest.
The Birdneck STEM team was chosen on their merit, design process, and overall product created during their time in the Innovation Lab. The team included *********. The designs that were submitted were: Fastest Plane by Cos ***** and thrown by Anthony *****, Slowest Plane by ******, and Furthest Flying Plane by ********.
Even though it was our first time entering the competition, we placed in two of the three categories. 3rd place for fastest plane and 2nd place for slowest plane.
