What is an innovation lab?
Whenever we think of innovation we usually assume an invention or product and normally involving technology. This misinterpretation leads to individuals thinking that they cannot be innovators. In the I-Lab, we aim to teach our students that no matter the project, task, or problem, they CAN be innovators, even if it is a change of an idea, method, or even opening their eyes to new ways of thinking. Most importantly, students develop the skills to tackle any problem and critically think their way to success.

Teachers teach the Design Process Method in the I-Lab in a year long Problem Based Learning Project. What this is, can be a guide to creating a mindset for taking on any problem in life. There are many different ways to describe and use the design process but here at Birdneck we have simplified it to: Identify the problem, plan a solution, communicate, carry out, re-assess and carry-out again as needed, and then reflect. It may seem like a lot, but as you view the projects, you can see that these steps are almost natural. As we point it out to our students, they will be building skills for life through the design process. A problem based learning project is a unit of study with many different tasks all culminating to completing a large project
