Pensacola had been passed between the Spanish, French, and English for so long that many of those who resided in the town were either bi-lingual or at the very least had to conduct business in multiple languages. This was especially true after the transfer to the United States. Many newspaper advertisements are in both English and Spanish. N.S. Parmantier and J. Delazzery were local translators who provided interpreting services for both citizens and those coming in through Pensacola’s port. Delazzery appears as J. Delazzeris in the 1820s census data.
