Merchant

The port of Pensacola was a busy place. In the period leading up to the American transition, ships coming in were often offloaded with lighters - smaller vessels that could more easily pull up to shore. By 1829, however, a 1000 foot wharf replaced the dilapidated docks along the waterfront. Merchants advertised incoming cargo for sale in the newspaper. F.H. Nisbet & Co. relocated from Mobile to Pensacola, likely to take advantage of the abundant commercial shipping. The store sold everything from dry goods and alcohol to fabric in the latest patterns.
