Twitchell & Watson are the purveyors of this store. Twitchell is Timothy Twitchell, born about 1783 in New Hampshire. In the 1830 census, he had 18 enslaved people and 11 free people in his household. He filed numerous land claims in the Tallahassee land office in the 1830s for his acreage in the Pensacola area. Among those land purchases was the northeast quarter of the Arcadia tract. By 1850, his real estate was worth $5,000, the equivalent of $171,000 today. As evidenced by the ad in both English and Spanish, the sudden shift in country did not result in immediate social changes. Spanish was still the common language used to conduct business or converse with citizens of the town.
