Main Street follows the original shoreline, very nearly where the high-tide mark was during the 1820s. Extensive filling operations took place to add more usable land along the waterfront in the late 1800s. Many advertisements in the early American period state “on the beach” or “by the beach” for location. This indicates it was likely somewhere along where Main Street runs today.
