Cope Hood- Stanbrook Abbey

Cope Hood, 18th century

Current location: private collection

Made on the continent, this hood is embroidered with a central image of St Margaret of Antioch standing over Satan in the form of a dragon

The hood is part of the collections of the Benedictine Stanbrook Abbey and was possibly brought to England from the continent after 1793 when the order was forced to leave Europe and settle in Worcester due to the French Revolution. The other possibility is that it was given to the Convent during the 19th century.

Founded in 1623 in Cambrai, the Spanish Netherlands (now northern France), the Benedictine monastery of Our Lady of Comfort returned to England and settled in Worcester in 1838, later moving to a new build in Wass, Yorkshire, 2009.
