Diethetics

Course coordinator: Conf Dr. Macri Adrian

Diethetics in veterinary medicine is relatively new and continues to evolve. Clinical nutrition integrates the science of nutrition with the practice of medicine and surgery to optimize health. In human clinical nutrition, dietitians provide food and nutrient guidelines, but the patient is ultimately in control and must correctly choose from a variety of foods. With veterinary clinical nutrition, the potential for compliance is better because there are readily available highly palatable, convenient pet foods specifically designed to treat or prevent specific diseases. Hence, there are many opportunities for veterinarians to positively affect the long term health of pets and to assist in the medical and surgical management of disease.

Objectives :

- the gaining and acquiring of base knowledge necessary for the diets according to some diseases;

- the forming of a knowledge base of the feed bioconversion in animal organisms for the maintenance and for the production and of the way of covering these;

- gaining of knowledge for the studying base of clinical nutrition.

Overall course objectives:

Beyond the science, it is the art of clinical nutrition that successfully combines the knowledge of nutrient metabolism, diseases processes and problematic logistics into the practical day-to-day feeding of our patients.

Specific objectives:

- principles of manufacturing commercial dry pet food, moist pet food, semi-moist food, soft-dry food and nutritive supplements; knowledge of basic ingredients from commercial pet foods; carbohydrates, proteins, fibers, fats and additives.

- principles of making pet foods at home: clinical importance, rationale for choosing home made foods;

- health maintenance programs for pets, for the canine athlete, examples of nutritional diets of clinical patients.
