Etopathology

Coordinator: Lecturer Dr. Purdoiu Robert

The Departament of Etopathology with the diagnosis and therapy of behavioral disorders in domestic animals, especially in pets. At the end of the course the student will acquire both theoretical knowledge about the normal and pathological behavior of domestic animals, as well as practical skills consisting in conducting an ethological consultation and, application of a therapeutic protocol for treating behavioral problems.

Reconstructive surgery

Coordinator:lecturer Ober Ciprian

Reconstructive surgery is commonly performed to close defects that occur secondary to trauma, to correct or improve congenital abnormalities, or after removal of neoplasms. A variety of reconstructive procedures are available; it is important to select the appropriate technique or techniques to prevent complications and avoid unnecessary cost. Large or irregular defects sometimes can be closed using relaxing incisions or “plasty” techniques (e.g.,V-to-Y plasty, Z-plasty). Large defects or those on the extremities may require that tissue be mobilized from other sites. Pedicle flaps are tissues that are partly detached from the donor site and mobilized to cover a defect. Grafts involve the transfer of a segment of skin to a distant (recipient) site. Careful planning and meticulous, atraumatic surgical techniques are necessary to prevent excessive tension, kinking, and circulatory compromise. The amount of skin available for transfer varies between sites on the same animal and between breeds. Little skin can be mobilized in the extremities, whereas advancing adjacent tissue often can close large defects over the trunk.

Plastic and reconstructive lectures and labs offer the possibility:

  • to know the veterinary specific vocabulary for the domain of Reconstructive Surgery
  • to recognise the general instruments for cutaneous flaps in animals
  • to understand the perioperative protocol (anaesthesia, analgesia, postoperative care) in animals candidates to reconstructive surgeries
  • to understand the management of surgical approach of plastic surgeries
  • to recognise the general cutaneous lesions which could be managed by reconstructive surgeries
  • to understand and to apply the basic surgeries in case of cutaneous flaps.

To achieve these, the main subjects are followed (1 hour lecture, 2 hours labs per week, 14 weeks, 10th semester):

· skin anatomy and physiology, primary wound closure

· open wounds

· tension-relieving techniques

· tension-relieving sutures

· skin defects

· local or subdermal pattern flaps

· axial pattern flaps
