Learning environment creation
The student teacher uses his or her knowledge of individual and group behavior to create an environment in the classroom that promotes positive social interaction and active participation of all students in learning.
Creating an environment that promotes learning is very important to have your students engaged with the lesson. I am a very organized person and I wanted this to show in my classroom. The first thing I incorporated in my classes was a daily agenda. Through this agenda I would let my students know what was going to be covered that day, if they needed their computers, etc. This helped the students know how we would be dividing our time. On what we could spend more time and what should be done quickly. The agenda helped all of us in the classroom get organized for the lesson.
Another thing I included in my classroom was a designated area to remind my students about their homework. I always announce any assignments they have during class and write it on the board. This way the students know they can go to my classroom and check what they have to do even when I'm not there.
I also incorporate activities that promote a positive social interaction between students. For example, I create many small group activities. I was teaching a unit on hurricanes. One of the classes was on how hurricanes are named. After giving the class, I divided my students into small groups of 3 and gave each of them a Hurricane Name chart. They had to use the rules they had just learned to create a list of names for the 2019 Hurricane Season. They researched the names of the hurricanes/tropical storms that had already past, and came up with the rest of the names as a group. Once they were finished, I allowed my students to share what their lists. After the class was over I created a chart and wrote the names they had created. I also wrote the official 2019 Hurricane Season Names and posted them onto the class bulletin board. They had the opportunity to see if they had gotten any names right.
Door decorations may seem as something small, but they can have the ability to motivate students. The topic that we were studying when I started thinking about decorating the door, was Video Games. I wanted to decorate it using a game they knew and loved but still allude to the history of it all . I sketched two ideas I had. The first idea was one that I was thinking about since before beginning the theme. The second idea was one that came to me while thinking about games that kids still play. Ultimately, I decided to make my first idea come to life. I created a big Game Boy color with a classic Super Mario game being played in the back.
I decorated the door after classes were over. The next day, once the students saw the door, they immediately started to pretend as if the console actually worked and were playing it. I believe that even if just a little bit, it got them excited for the next lessons.
