To the Parents of a University Preparatory High School Sophomore Student:
The UPHS Counseling Department would like to invite you and your student to participate in a Sophomore Counseling Conference. Your student’s second year of high school is finishing; thus, the purpose of this conference is to assist in developing an educational plan for the future. As a sophomore, your student may think high school graduation is far off in the future, but it is closer than they realize. What your student does in the next two years will affect what they do after graduation.
The UPHS Counseling Department would like to invite you and your student to participate in a Sophomore Counseling Conference. Your student’s second year of high school is finishing; thus, the purpose of this conference is to assist in developing an educational plan for the future. As a sophomore, your student may think high school graduation is far off in the future, but it is closer than they realize. What your student does in the next two years will affect what they do after graduation.
Does your student want to go to a four-year university, a community college, a technical school, or do they want to do something else entirely? Is your student on track academically, so many opportunities are open to them after their high school graduation? Since your student is a sophomore, they have the time to cultivate the talents and extracurricular activities that scholarship committees and college admissions officials look for in applicants. For example, if your student gets a job, volunteers their time, learns to play a musical instrument, polishes their essay-writing skills, applies for an internship, plays a sport, acquires an interesting or unique hobby, auditions for a play, or is involved with a church or scouting group. Whether your student does one or several of these things, it is important that they do something. Grades are important, but scholarships and college admissions are not always based on grades alone. These areas are all topics addressed during the Sophomore Counseling Conference.
