UPHS History Day

What is History Day?

According to the National History Day®(NHD) website, "National History Day is a non-profit education organization based in College Park, Maryland. NHD offers year-long academic programs that engage over half a million middle- and high-school students around the world annually in conducting original research on historical topics of interest. Since 1974, NHD has continuously improved history education by providing professional development opportunities and curriculum materials for educators. The largest NHD program is the National History Day Contest that encourages more than half a million students around the world to conduct historical research on a topic of their choice."

This yearly project provides students with the opportunity to engage in essential skills and mindsets. They will learn to apply their foundational skills of reading and thinking critically, like a historian, and learn different methods of communicating their knowledge and research to varied audiences.

UPHS' History Day Legacy

UPHS Students have been participating in the Tulare County History Day Contest since 2015. Each year, a number students have represented our school and county at the California State Finals in Sacramento. In 2018, one of our students made it to the final 15 at the state level and was one step close to make it to nationals with her project on "The Pursuit of Peace": Conflicts Over Compromises in Nuclear Policy, this same student is participating in her 4th consecutive year in the county contest and hopefully in her 4th State Finals.

Dear UPHS Families,

Your student will be working this semester and part of Spring semester on a History Research Project. For more information about the theme, visit the National History Day website available at https://nhd.org/contest-affiliates/annual-theme/#toggle-id-2 , this year’s theme is Taking a Stand in History. All juniors and recommended sophomores will submit their projects to the county contest The TCOE Contest takes place in March 2017. Last year, 5 students represented UPHS and Tulare County in the state finals.

To complete this project, your student must follow a strict series of due dates and will need your support during the process. I recommend your student visit our local library, TCOE ERS Library, and the COS library to do research and use the available resources. In addition to this, your student can visit the following online library databases at teens.erslibrary.org (login: uphs.student & password: student) and http://www.cos.edu/Library/Databases (use banner ID).

For this project, your student has selected the topic of _____________________________________________________________________. Your student has also decided to work in collaboration with ______________________________________________________. For this reason, you must understand your student may have to meet with his group after school, at your home, one of the other student's home, the local library, and/or another convenient place for all members of the group to meet.

This project addresses all aspects the California Common Core State Standards, and I believe the project and the process of developing a project will help your student prepare for college and their future career. This project will also be a significant portion of your student’s grade both this semester and Spring semester. To keep track of our due dates, please refer to the calendar attached to this document, the UPHS School Website (Click on) History Day tab, or visit my Social Science Website. Once again thank you for your support.

Sincerely,

Mr. Figueroa

We have reviewed the History Project Letter and Calendar. I understand my student’s responsibility, and I understand my role as a parent to support my student through this project. I will do my best to encourage my student to meet all deadlines and seek for help when needed.
