On September 11, 2024, I visited MovEd La Huerta again, this time to observe the PS2 learners whose schedule is in the afternoon. Although their class is bigger than the PS1 which has seven learners each session, they are relatively more calm, cooperative, and manageable. I think this is mainly because they already have prior school experiences in PS1 and are not entirely new or culture-shocked with going to school on a daily basis.
In fact, according to Teacher Anna and Teacher Gerlie, only few parents from PS2 bring their children to school every day because most of them are independed enough to go on their own. Giving instructions to PS2 learners is much easier as compared to PS1 since they are relatively fast learners by now, although there are still some who are not as participative.
One of the main concerns I noticed for the PS2 class though is their class schedule which is 1:00pm to 3:00pm. I went there at 1:00pm and the learning lab was really scorching hot! Even the air coming from the electric fans were hot. I found it concerning because it might affect the quality of their learning, given that the learning environment can be a source of discomfort. For instance when doing class activities, some of them might hurry in finishing the activity because of the humidity they feel inside the classroom.
Notwithstanding, Teacher Gerlie and Teacher Anna were quick to reassure me that PS2 learners are just fast learners as compared to PS1, which is why they finish the activities right away. They too are more cooperative with the activities that the teachers ask them to do without a lot of questions.
After class, I got the chance to speak with Teacher Gerlie and Teacher Anna for a quick chat. I asked them as to what they think is/are lacking in the learning lab that would greatly improve the quality of learning of the learners. Both of them answered the lack of instructional materials and projected visual aids to support the print materials (storybooks, worksheets) and non-projected visual aids (chalkboard) that they use.
From this brief chat, I already got a glimpse of what my special project should focus on. Thus, I decided that on my next visit, I will conduct another interview -- this time a more comprehensive one -- with the teachers and a survey questionnaire for the parents as also suggested by my critique during the town hall presentation, Mr. Alcantara.
