On December 2, 2024, I turned over the instructional materials needed for the pilot implementation together with the teachers' manual I created. I also handed to Teacher Gerlie the pre-assessment and post-assessment materials which I will be needing for the evaluation phase. I gave her some instructions regarding the pilot testing, i.e., which lesson to conduct and the specific instructions for it.
On December 5, 2024, the teachers conducted the pilot testing of the Module 5 Day 2 lesson. My gatekeeper and I observed and evaluated the lesson using the evaluation instrument I made in accordance with Kirkpatrick's Model of Evaluation. The lesson is entitled "Prutas Pampalusog at Pampalakas (GLOW Food)". I chose to pilot-test this specific lesson because the activities involved a game, i.e., bring me, and a worksheet activity using tactile materials. The game used food toys as materials thereby promoting play-based learning, while the worksheets using tactile materials promote multisensory learning. Both activities cover my special project's main themes, making it ideal to be pilot-tested.
However, I encountered problems in terms of the teachers' implementation because they did not exactly follow the instructions in the teachers' manual I provided and instead just conducted the lesson impromptu. Instead of teaching the lesson on glow food to introduce food groups, they focused on teaching healthy food in general. Nonetheless, I was still able to observe the learners' reaction, learning, behavior, and results.
With this, I realized that the way we envision things as instructional designers may not always be the way that things will be actualized in reality by the implementers. As designers, we have to anticipate scenarios like this so we can properly handle the evaluation and eventually design revisions. However, this should not be a reason for us not to believe in the effectiveness of our design and materials. At the same time, I also acknowledge that there is always room for improvement, and it was actually nice and fulfilling to see my design come to life through the pilot testing albeit imperfect.
I'm also just so happy and fulfilled that I am finally nearing the end of my special project. I hope that with this, I will be able to leave a lasting impact to my partner organization through sustainability-focused learning activities to ensure quality pre-primary education for all young learners.
