Competences

The Flow Cytometry and Cell Sorting service consists of a research group with advanced expertise in biomedical research. The group has extensive experience, demonstrated by numerous publications in international scientific journals in the field of flow cytometry combined with cellular and molecular biology techniques. These skills are applied to various research projects focused on immunology, vascular pathophysiology, stem cells, and onco-hematology.

The service is equipped with cutting-edge technologies, including the BD FACSAria IIIu cell sorter, which is available in only a few centers in Italy and allows for a wide range of applications across different research fields.


The service offers support for:

  • In vitro evaluation of the effects of drugs, cytokines, or other compounds on cells of different origins for basic and preclinical research.

  • Targeted studies in clinical research.

  • Development and improvement of industrial products utilizing flow cytometry techniques.

  • Design of innovative cellular therapy protocols in preclinical models.


Specifically, it is possible to perform:

  • Phenotypic characterization of cell populations with multiparametric analysis (up to 25 fluorescence parameters).

  • Ploidy level assessment and cell cycle phase evaluation.

  • Quantitative evaluation of cell proliferation and apoptosis.

  • Monitoring of transfection efficiency with fluorescent molecules (GFP) and sorting of positive cells.

  • Monitoring of cell differentiation through the analysis of specific membrane markers.

  • Isolation of highly purified viable cell populations from human and animal tissues through high-throughput cell sorting.

  • Assessment of the efficiency of fluorescent molecules.

The service collaborates with biobank and microscopy services for the comprehensive characterization of cells of interest. The applications of the service are relevant both for in vitro evaluation of drug and compound effects and for clinical research aimed at gaining deeper insights into various pathologies.
