The European Commission last year approved a recovery plan valued at 750.000 millions of euros ($ 825.000 millions) to help European Union countries (backed by German Chancellor Angela Merkel) cope with the disastrous coronavirus crisis.
Drosen is the director of the Institute of Virology at the prestigious Charité Hospital in Berlin. He is recognized as one of three scientists who discovered the SARS virus, another type of coronavirus that affected 8,000 and killed 800 people approximately 17-18 years ago. Since the covid-19 began, Drosten advises the chancellor on the pandemic. And the diagnostic test created by his laboratory in 2020 is now used in many countries around the world.
The scientist had a role in the fight against another epidemic caused by a coronavirus, the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), which has caused more than 800 deaths since 2012
A doctor from Singapore traveled to Germany, had symptoms similar to a respiratory disease that was in Asia and the World Health Organization (WHO) had just named it "severe acute respiratory syndrome" or SARS, for its acronym in English.
Drosten discovered that it was another type of coronavirus. Around the same time J.S. Malik Peiris at the University of Hong Kong and Larry J. Anderson at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) came to the same conclusion.
