The territory of the current nation of Belize was within the cultural orbit of the Maya, the great civilization that dominated Mesoamerica until the arrival of the Spanish conquerors.
Between the 2nd and 10th centuries of the Christian era, lived the splendor of this culture. There is no Mesoamerican political unit, the Mexican city from Teotihuacán wielded great influence. This influence allowed the emergence of states in Central America. In Belize, there are several archaeological sites of great interest such as Altún Ha, El Caracol, Cerros, Santa Rita, and Xunantunich. One of them, Caracol, hosted the largest states of the region. The name in those days was Oxhuitza.
