In order to boost pride in their work, students and I have worked together to create a website for publishing and showcasing their work (global/social issue documentaries, poetry from the Interdisciplinary unit with Language Acquisition, and other writing assignments). Another project that we have worked on together are the global/social issue documentaries. More information regarding these projects can be found on the global/social issue page of the website. Later on in the year, we will work together with the Language Acquisition classes on an Interdisciplinary poetry unit, and classes will publish their poetry on this website as well.
Johanna Nicholson-Here is a link to my classroom's Mock Trial Capstone for our novel study on The Outsiders. My 8th grade ELA students worked through multiple on record court cases to learn how to sift through real-time evidence. The outlines and templates I provided were differentiated per student at their level in order to allow All students to participate. All materials I've created for this unit are available for download.
My students have learned multiple different types of conjunctions, so they have created Canva posters to display their knowledge of at least one conjunction and an example. This will be an on-going and ever-growing website as they complete more posters throughout the end of the semester.
I used Thinglink to introduce a topic that was given in our math curriculum. I was not familiar with the topic so I did a little research and found some interesting pictures and articles to try to capture the attention of my students. When presented in class, several of my most timid and reluctant learners were the first to respond to questions about the topic. It was then, that I decided to allow students to create and share math concepts using their topics of interests. Here are a few that have been created so far.
Action Service Project By Aisha Haggard
In this section you will see student work that was completed in our satire unit. Our objective was to create a satirical piece that addresses a controversial current event. Students were required to have skills such as research, knowledge of satire, and awareness of who their audience is. While this was challenging for students to create, the final results were outstanding! This assignment was a lot of student's first time interacting with this type of text and sometimes felt defeated when they were not able to grasp the objective. Therefore, I would suggest a lot of scaffolding with mini-lessons filled with appropriate SNL videos and using a resource called "The Onion", which is written satire. I would also suggest students work with partners to help ease some of the challenges. If you are interested in this type of activity, please see student exemplars below,
Using prodigy as a review...
I used Prodigy as a review game with my students after their lesson on rates and unit prices. They absolutely loved being able to review a math topic in a video game-like scenario. What they enjoyed even more was competing against their classmates and trying to make it to the top of the class leader board. Below are a few pictures of some of my students in the middle of their "math battles" with each other.
The students loved this method of review and have already asked when they would be allowed to play again!
